SWITZERLAND-UN-GABON-EGUINEA-BORDER
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan (R) welcomes Gabonese President Omar Bongo 27 February 2006 at the UN office in Geneva. Annan was to meet with the presidents of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea to try to settle a border dispute tied to potentially huge oil reserves. The west African leaders have tussled for years over three islands in the Gulf of Guinea: Corisco (20 square kilometres/eight square miles), 30-hectare (75-acre) Mbanie and Cocotiers, a rocky outcrop. The surrounding Corisco Bay is tipped as a new oil Eldorado, which has raised the stakes for the two neighbours which are already riding on a black gold boom. AFP PHOTO / CHRISTOPHE BOSSET
