GERMANY-CARNIVAL-TRADITION-PARADE
A so-called "Schwellkopp" (swollen head), the traditional carnival figure of Mainz, takes part in the Rose Monday carnival street parade 27 February 2006 in Mainz. More than one million people took to the streets of cities across the Rhine region of Germany to celebrate the highpoint of the country-s carnival week. Carnival is a tradition stemming from Catholic regions in the west and south of Germany, but it is rapidly being adopted by cities in the north and east. AFP PHOTO DDP/MARTIN OESER GERMANY OUT
