GERMANY-CARNIVAL-TRADITION-PARADE
Young carnival enthousiast protect their "Blauer Funke" (Blue Spark) costumes against rain and snown as they take part in the Rose Monday carnival street parade 27 February 2006 in Cologne. The fast-approaching football World Cup was the theme but revellers also poked fun at the bird flu crisis as one million people took to the streets of the western city of Cologne for the biggest carnival of the season in Germany. Carnival is a tradition stemming from Catholic regions in the west and south of Germany, but it is rapidly being adopted by cities in the north and east. AFP PHOTO DDP/HENNING KAISER GERMANY OUT
