SPAIN-HEALTH-FLU-BIRD

A duck is seen in the Albufera reserve near Alcudia on the island of Majorca, 03 March 2006. The El Pais newspaper reported that no bird flu cases had so far been detected in the country despite 23,000 tests on dead birds last year and 5,000 examinations since the beginning of the year. Eight new cases of H5 bird flu have been detected in Sweden after two wild ducks were found to be carrying the virus earlier this week, the Swedish Board of Agriculture said on Friday. If the virus does turn out to be the H5N1 strain, Sweden will be the ninth country in the 25-member European Union to be affected by the deadly virus.
