FILES-CHINA-NPC-CRIME-JUSTICE-RIGHTS
(FILES) Photo dated 22 January 2006 shows the scene at the intermediate people-s court in Baicheng, in China-s northeast Jilin province, during a public sentencing held for four convicted murderers of vice-police chief Rui Zhi-jiang, where Wang Long, Zhang Jian-jun, Du Hui and Sun Jian were sentenced to death immediately by execution. China-s top judge Xiao Yang said 11 March 2006 during a speech to delegates and top leaders at the National People-s Congress (NPC) in Beijing that China-s courts sentenced 10 percent more people to prison in 2005 compared to the previous year, locking up a total of 844,717 people, while adding that nearly 40 percent of the defendants were convicted of serious crimes, including setting off explosions, committing murder, armed robbery, rape and kidnapping.China does not reveal the number of people sentenced to death, but it is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world combined.
