(FILES) Former US Defense Secretary Caspar Weiberger (C) leaves US District Court 24 November 1992 accompanied by his attorneys, Bob Benett (L) and Carl Rauh. Weinberg pleaded innocent to the charge of making false statements relating to the Iran-Contra affair. Caspar Weinberger, has died of pneumonia 28 March 2006 at the age of 88, reported CNN, 28 March 2006. Weinberger served as defense secretary from 1982 to 1987, overseeing the US administration-s so-called "Star Wars" military program. Despite his reputation for cost-cutting, which earned him the nickname "Cap the Knife," Weinberger championed Reagan-s plan to boost the Defense Department-s budget and modernize the US armed forces.
