US Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger (R) confers 09 October 1986 in Beijing with Chinese paramount leader Deng Xiao Ping during his visit to China. Caspar Weinberger, died of pneumonia 28 March 2006 at the age of 88. Weinberger served as defense secretary from 1982 to 1987, overseeing the US administration-s so-called "Star Wars" military program. Despite his reputation for cost-cutting, which earned him the nickname "Cap the Knife," Weinberger championed Reagan-s plan to boost the Defense Department-s budget and modernize the US armed forces.
