South African double world champion Roland Schoeman has joined the long list of withdrawals from the event, officials said on 05 April. The pull-out is another blow for the championships already feeling the absence of swimming greats Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett. Organisers brought in bus-loads of schoolchildren to fill the empty seats at the cavernous Qi Zhong stadium, which is more than an hour-s drive from central Shanghai, as competition got under way.
