AFGHANISTAN-US-ATTACKS
US soldiers hold various national flags during a celebration for the United States Army’s 231st birthday at the US base in Bagram, 50 kms north of Kabul, 14 June 2006. Coalition and Afghan forces have launched their biggest counter-insurgency operation since the fall of the Taliban and are preparing to move into new rebel strongholds, the coalition said. The campaign, named Operation Mountain Thrust, was launched in southern Afghanistan in mid-May, spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Paul Fitzpatrick said as information about the operation had been under wraps.
