CHINA-HERITAGE-GREATWALL-HISTORY-TOURISM

Visitors descend a new walkway beside a crumbling section of the Dajingmen Great Wall left largely to a natural state of decay, 24 May 2006, overlooking the historic garrison town of Zhangjiakou, some 180 kilometers north of Beijing, in China-s northern Hebei province. Unlike other Great Wall sites nearer to Beijing which have been restored for tourism, the wall around Dajingmen Gateway, which marked China-s northern border dating back to the early Ming Dynasty (around 1368) and rebuilt again in 1546 during the Qing Dynasty, has been left largely untouched. Dajingmen is one of four major historic passes along the Great Wall, and was the first gate in a line of defense protecting the capital from Mongolian and other armies from the north.
