UN-ARMS -PETITION
Julius Arile(L), and Xavier Torres(R), both victims of small arms use, pose 26 June 2006, before an AK-47 made of mannequin limbs to symbolize people harmed by small arms, in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near the United Nations building in New York. A major UN conference began its review Monday of efforts to eradicate the billion-dollar a year illegal trade in small arms, amid calls for member states to agree a global treaty on the issue. Just before the conference opened, anti-gun campaigners presented UN chief Kofi Annan with what was billed as the world-s largest photo petition -- bearing the portraits of one million people. The petition urged world leaders to negotiate a strict set of international rules to curb the illicit spread of small arms. Arile was the millionth person to sign the million faces petition, with an enlarged version of the photo petition shown behind. AFP PHOTO/NICHOLAS ROBERTS
