The fifth straight night of Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip followed Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas-s insistence that mediation efforts to free the captured soldier were continuing despite reports that talks had stalled. Nineteen-year-old Gilad Shalit was snatched by Palestinian militants a week today in a daring raid on an army outpost in Israel in an attack that also left two servicemen dead.
