US-KATRINA ANNIVERSARY-NOLA-INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
Local girls wear red, white and blue Mardi Gras beads at a July 4th Independence Day celebration at Spanish Plaza on the New Orleans river front, 04 July 2006. With the Essence Musical Festival moved this year from New Orleans to Houston, the Crescent City is experiencing an especially slow summer tourist season putting pressure on the already stressed tourism-related businesses which are the mainstay of the city-s economy. Summertime, normally the low season due to high humidity, this summer-s lull appears to be exacerbated by the fact that it-s the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the worst natural disaster in the country-s history and the perception that the city is crippled, according to reports in local media.
