Dr. Dean Richardson(R) walks with Barbaro in this handout photo released 14 July 2006, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, 13 July 2006 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Doctors give Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro a poor chance of survival after a severe infection to his left hind leg that required removal of 80 percent of the animal's left hind hoof. The three-year-old colt, one of only six unbeaten horses to capture the Derby, won by 6 1/2 lengths two months ago at Chruchill Downs before shattering his right hind leg in the Preakness on 20 May. Dean Richardson, who has been working on the horse here at the University of Pennsylvania's equine center, said the chances of recovery are bleak because his healthy hind leg has suffered the severe infection laminitis. "I don't want to put a percentage on it. I would say poor," Richardson said. "I would say very guarded at this point. As long as the horse is not suffering we're going to continue to try."
