An undated and unlocated picture of General Francisco Franco watching the front during the Civil War. Spain marked 70 years since the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, 18 July 2006 as opinion polls acknowledged divisions still run deep over the legacy of a conflict which left half a million dead. Traditionally, since General Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces triumphed and disbanded the elected institutions of the Second Republic replacing them with a military dictatorship, Spaniards have marked the date in low-key fashion, maintaining a so-called "pact of silence."
