German Chancellor Angela Merkel poses with Juergen Hambrecht (R), chairman of German chemicals maker BASF and new chairman of the German industry's Asia-Pacific Committee, and Heinrich von Pierer (L), chairman of the supervisory board of German electronics maker Siemens and former APA chairman, ahead of a meeting of the committee 18 July 2006 in Berlin. The Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) was founded in September 1993 by the Foundation of German Industries BDI, the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce and the German Asia-Pacific Business Association with the primary objective to enable German industry to catch up with the head start enjoyed by foreign competitors already operating in the region.
