MARATHON-KIEHL BADWATER ULTRAMARATHON
Marvin Snowbarger, 69, (L) a retired professor from San Jose, California, and the oldest competitor in the race, gets a cold bandana from a member of his crew (R) as he competes in the Kiehl Badwater Ultramarathon 24 July, 2006, in Death Valley, California. This foot race covers 135 miles (217kms) non-stop from Badwater, the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet (85.5 meters) below sea level, to Mt. Whitney Portals at 8,360 feet (2,533 meters) above sea level. Temperature in Death Valley hit 126F (52C) and three mountain ranges are crossed, making this one of the most demanding and extremem running races in the world. AFP PHOTO/ROBYN BECK
