MARATHON-KIEHL BADWATER ULTRAMARATHON
Defending champion Scott Jurek, 32, of the US crosses the finish line at Whitney Portal in Lone Pine, California, to win the Kiehl Badwater Ultramarathon 25 July, 2006. Jurek travelled by foot 135 miles (217kms) non-stop from Badwater in Death Valley, the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet (85.5 meters) below sea level, to Mt. Whitney Portals at 8,360 feet (2,533 meters) above sea level in 25 hours, 41 minutes and 18 seconds. Temperature in Death Valley hit 126F (52C) and three mountain ranges are crossed, making this one of the most demanding and extreme running races in the world. AFP PHOTO/ROBYN BECK
