CHINA-WEATHER-STORM-EGRET-BUFFALO
A little egret stands atop a water buffalo as it crosses shallow waters in Wuhu, 29 July 2006, in eastern China's Anhui province. China's densely populated eastern and central provinces have been battered by gale force winds and heavy rain since Typhoon Kamei hit 25 July, before being downgraded to a tropical storm, after causing death and misery to countless rural communitues unprepared for the relentless bad weather. The little egret is a small white heron which breed on wetlands, with a preference for lowland shallow waters particularly along coasts and estuaries, while the water buffalo, a member of the wild oxen family, is widespread across much of south and southeast Asia and respected for its strength by farmers who rely on it to toil the land.
