UN-MIDEAST-LEBANON
Ambassador Nouhad Mahmoud, Representative of Lebanon to the UN, speaks 30 July, 2006, during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council at UN headquarters in New York. The United Nations Security Council opened an emergency meeting on the Lebanon crisis, as France circulated a draft resolution for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict. The security council met at the request of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora in the wake of Israel's air attack early 30 July on the village of Qana in southern Lebanon, which killed dozens of civilians, many of them children.
