CUBA-CASTRO
A man reads on August 1st, 2006, in Havana, the newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party Granma, which reproduces on its front page the statement read on national television supposedly on behalf of President Fidel Castro late Monday, saying he had undergone surgery, and handed over power to his brother Raul. The elderly but still-fiery leftist leader, who has clung to power for 47 years as Latin America's only communist strongman and who turns 80 on August 13, said in a statement that he would be out for "several weeks of rest" following the operation to stem intestinal bleeding.
