CUBA-CASTRO

(FILE) Cuban President Fidel Castro makes a speech in Havana, 04 September 2005, ratifying his offer to send 1,100 Cuban doctors with two backpacks of medicine each to help people affected by Hurricane Katrina in the southern US. Speculation grew over Fidel Castro's health following surgery as both the communist leader and his replacement and brother Raul Castro remain out of sight 03 August 2006, while security quietly tightens around the country. A top official said Wednesday that Fidel Castro, 79, remained "very alert" following his operation, and continued to closely follow domestic and international affairs. AFP PHOTO/Adalberto ROQUE
