CHILE-STRIKE-LA ESCONDIDA'S MINE
Miners in strike protest on the roads into Antofagasta, 1800 km north of Santiago, Chile, 10 August 2006. Striking workers at Chile's Escondida copper mine, the largest in the world, said Thursday they were awaiting a new offer from the management to relaunch negotiations as the two sides appeared far away from agreement. "We are waiting, and we hope that the company (Anglo-Australian resources group BHP Billiton) will change its position and make us a new offer," Pedro Marin, a spokesman for the 2,052 striking workers, told AFP.
