CZECH-POLITICS-PAROUBEK
Outgoing Czech Social Democrat (CSSD) Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek leaves Czech President Vaclav Klaus (out of camera range), 16 August 2006 at Prague's Hradcany Castle after he submitted his resignation to the president. Klaus will receive later in the afternoon Mirek Topolanek, head of the election winning centre-right Civic Democrats Party (ODS). Paroubek's resignation makes possible the appointment as his successor of Mirek Topolanek, ODS party topped the poll in the 02-03 June general election with 35 percent of the vote. But the ODS did not win an outright majority. Topolanek's task of forming a new government has been made more difficult by the failure of his initial plan to team up with the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Greens (SZ), forming a coalition with 100 seats in the 200-member parliament. He is now in talks with Paroubek's CSSD about the terms on which the ODS could form a minority government.
