In this hand out made available by the Palestinian Press Office, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is shown photos of Palestinian men being held in Israeli jails as he and Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas arrive for a joint press conference at the Palestinian Authority headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah, 30 August 2006. Families gathered to demand the release of some relatives being held in Israeli jails. There are some 10,000 Palestinians including women and children being held in the jails. Annan called for Israel to stop its Gaza offensive and closure, and for Palestinian militants to stop firing rockets into the Jewish state, after talks with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the West Bank.
