UN-ANNAN-SUCCESSION-VIKE-FREIBERGA

(FILES) - File picture taken 22 September 2004 in New York shows President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga delivering her address during the annual debate of the two-week session of the 59th United Nations General Assembly. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania officially put 15 September 2006 forward Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga as a candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as UN secretary-general. The 68-year-old Latvian president, a close US ally, thus becomes the sixth person to enter the race to succeed Annan, whose second five-year term expires at the end of December. If elected, she would become the first woman secretary general in the world body's 61-year history, but her chances of winning appeared slim as most UN members agree that it is now Asia's turn to assume the world body's top job in line with an unwritten rule of regional rotation.
