GERMANY-ELECTIONS-NPD-PASTOERS
Udo Pastoers (R), the chief candidate for the neo-Nazi party NPD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, walks past Soacial Democrats (SPD) State Premier Harald Ringstorff on a TV set, 17 September 2006 in Schwerin, after first polls for the German capital's regional elections. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives CDU performed poorly in elections in two German states, Berlin and eastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while the extreme-right made a breakthrough in the eastern state, according to exit polls. The neo-Nazi German National Democratic Party (NPD) surged to claim 6.5 percent of the vote in the scenic but desperately poor state on the Baltic Coast which has the highest level of unemployment in the country.
