INDIA-RELIGION-HINDU

Indian Hindu devotee Vinod, carries his son dressed as Langoor as he leaves The Bara Hamuman Temple in Amritsar, 23 September 2006, during the Hindu festival of Navratri (Nine Nights). The festival of Navratri (nav = nine and ratri = nights) lasts for nine days with three days each devoted to worship of Maa Durga, the Goddess of Valor, Ma Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Maa Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. During the nine days of Navratri, feasting and fasting take precedence over all normal daily activities amongst the Hindus. Evenings give rise to the religious dances in order to worhip Goddess Durga Maa. According to a traditional belief, parents wishing for baby sons should bring a small boy to pray at the temple during Navratri. AFP PHOTO/NARINDER NANU
