US-SPACE-MARS-ROVER

This NASA handout image received 28 September 2006, and taken by the Mars rover Opportunity's navigation camera 26 September 2006, shows three exposures combined the into this panoramic view of the rim of Victoria Crater in Mars' Meridiani Planum region. The geologic robot wheeled to the rim of a half-mile crater after a difficult 18-month journey. The rover beamed black-and-white images back to Earth showing the crater interior complete with hanging rocky cliffs and rippling sand dunes on its floor."This is a geologist's dream come true," said Dr. Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, principal investigator for NASA's twin rovers Opportunity and Spirit. "Those layers of rock, if we can get to them, will tell us new stories about the environmental conditions long ago. We especially want to learn whether the wet era that we found recorded in the rocks closer to the landing site extended farther back in time. The way to find that out is to go deeper, and Victoria may let us do that." AFP PHOTO/NASA/JPL/HO =GETTY OUT=
