CYPRUS-INDEPENDENCE-PARADE
Cypriot national guard troops ride atop armoured vehicles during a military parade to mark the island's Independence Day in Nicosia 01 October 2006. Several European officials warned this week that the Cyprus issue could lead to a crisis for Turkey's talks on European Union membership. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the northern third in response to an attempt by Greek Cypriots to unite the island with Greece.
