North Korea may be making headlines with its nuclear bomb, but it is love, sex, torture and executions that get top billing in a darkly compelling musical here about the hermetic Stalinist state. Promoters of Yoduk Story, set in a notorious prison camp, called it a tale of hope, but it is hard to draw much comfort from the three-hour play in which most characters are beaten and almost everybody dies.
The show to highlight torture and brutality in prison camps and the larger human rights concerns in North Korea opened to a full house on Wednesday night at the Strathmore, a state-of-the-art concert hall in Bethesda near Washington,DC.
