SURF-BILLABONG PRO-SLATER
Seven times ASP world champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA) clinched his record eighth world title at the Billabong Pro in Mundaka, Spain, 13 October 2006. After his two biggest rivals current world number two Australia's Taj Burrow and Joel Parkinson lost before the finals, Slater’s campaign was over. Burrow fell to Australia's Dean Morrison in the quarterfinals and Parkinson was unable to withstand Slater’s assault in the semi finals and was eliminated. When Slater won his semi final heat, he also won his eighth world title. Slater faced Martinez in the finals but finished second to the Californian. AFP PHOTO / ASP © COVERED IMAGES / PETER HAMBLIN
