CHINA-XINJIANG-KASHGAR-MOSQUE
People congregate in front of the Idkah Mosque in Kashgar, 15 October 2006, in China's far west Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in Central Asia. Known as East Turkestan in times past, this primarily Muslim region of desolate deserts and majestic mountains through which the ancient Silk Road trade passed has had a history of multi-ethnic nomads and oasis dwellers going back over a millenia. As China's largest province comprising 16 percent of the country, Xinjiang now shares a border with eight other nations. Idkah Mosque has been the center of daily activity for Muslims in Kashgar since it was built in 1442 but the thriving bazzar that for years stood in front of the mosque was razed and turned into an open public plaza in recent years.
