PANAMA-REFERENDUM-CANAL
An oil tanker starts his route through one of the three locks of the Gatun lake in the Atlantic gate of the Panama Canal 20 October 2006. The plan to build a third set of locks will allow the 93-year-old canal joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to accept even oil supertankers. CID-GALLUP, for the daily El Panama America, said the measure would be approved by 77 percent of voters, while PSM-Sigma Dos, for the daily Critica and Channel 13 television, said 72 percent would vote yes in the October 22 referendum. The canal, built between 1904 and 1914, has allowed 922,000 ships to cross the Central American isthmus, avoiding the lengthy trip around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.
