A young girl with serious burns is washed by nurses 19 October 2006 a the Mama Yemo hospital in Kinshasa. She is the only member of her family to have survived a house fire. Previously a hospital of international repute, doctors recall the days when Mama Yemo -- as it was then called, in honor of the mother of Zaire's former dictator Mobutu Sese Seko (1965-1997) -- cared for politicians from all over central Africa and US doctors came there to practice. Built in 1912 by colonising Belgians, the hospital has fallen into disrepair: corridors with corrugated iron roofs link buildings with damp walls. Patients wander the hospital's halls, refusing to stay too long in the decrepit rooms. AFP PHOTO / LIONEL HEALING
