US-POVERTY-HOMELESSNESS
TO GO WITH STORY EEUU-POBREZA BY RANDY NIEVES
Jonathan, a homeless man who says has been living in the streets for 16 years, serves himself a plate of cooked greens near a makeshift kitchen they call the "Liberty Cafe" in a vacant lot in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood 27 October 2006. A couple dozen activists and homeless people set up tents and built shelters out of wood pallets in a city-owned vacant lot in an effort to house and feed neighborhood homeless people and to alleviate what organizers called lack of interest by the city in housing poor black people. Volunteers and well wishers from the neighborhood have donated money, food, clothing and time to help out in the project. According to figures by the US Census Bureau 37 million people lived in poverty in 2005. AFP PHOTO/Roberto SCHMIDT
