VIENNA-UNIONS-LABOR-ITUC-INFORMAL
The founder of India's Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), Renena Jhabwala, poses 31 October 2006 during a congress of 300 trade unions from around the world in Vienna. Jhabwala founded her union in 1971 and has about 800,000 members, including city street vendors, seamstresses who work from home, day laborers in the agriculture sector and small-scale producers. Representatives of the so-called informal economy are seeking recognition by the trade unions during the congress in Vienna to set up a new labor giant, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
