GUATEMALA-SPAIN-HUMAN RIGHTS-GUEVARA
General Angel Guevara (C), Guatemalan Defense minister during the 1978-1982 presidency of Romeo Lucas Garcia, is escorted by police officers at the 5th Sentence Tribunal in Guatemala City, on November 7th, 2006. Guevara turned himself in to the police when learning that a judge had issued an arrest warrant for him and five other people, after being accused by Spain for their involvement in a massacre at the Spanish Embassy in 1980, in which 39 people were burnt to death, including several Spanish diplomats. Arrest warrants were also issued against former dictator (1983-1986) Oscar Mejia, General (r) Benedicto Lucas, the Police's former director, Colonel (r) German Chupina and the civilians Pedro Garcia Arredondo and Donaldo Alvarez.
