GERMANY-HISTORY-WAR-REMEMBRANCE DAY
(L-R) The president of Germany's Federal Constitutional Court Hans-Juergen Papier, the president of the Bundesrat (Upper House of Parliament) Harald Ringstorff, Germany's President Horst Koehler, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the vice-president of the Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament) Wolfgang Thierse lay a wreath 19 November 2006 at Berlin's Neue Wache memorial. Traditionally, Germany's leading politicians commemorate the victims of war and tyranny on Remembrance Sunday at Berlin's Neue Wache with the sculpture "Mother with her Dead Son" by German artist Kaethe Kollwitz. This sculpture is directly under the memorial's oculus, and so is exposed to the rain, snow and cold of the Berlin climate, symbolising the suffering of civilians during the war.
