Indian railway police watch as a burning Intercity train 'Deccan Queen' stands on the track between Ulhasnagar and Ambernath Railway Station, some 65 kms from Mumbai,30 November 2006, after it was set ablaze by protestors. Three people have been killed and over 60 injured during widespread protests across Maharashtra following the alleged desecration of a statue of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Ambedkar, a political leader who is widely regarded as the chief architect of the Indian constitution. Born 1891 into an untouchable community; he spent his life fighting against the system of Hindu untouchability and the Indian Caste System. He is also credited for having sparked a revival of Buddhism in India, known as the Indian Buddhist movement.He has been honoured with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, awarded for the highest degrees of national service.
