Eight times reigning ASP world champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA), placed second behind dark horse Odirlei Coutinho (Bra) in the round of 32 at the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, Hawaii 05 December 2006. Slater advanced to the quarterfinals where he will face Jay Thompson (Aus), Pancho Sullivan (Haw) and Joel Parkinson (Aus).
