FIJI-COUP-ARMY-DEMOCRACY-BANNERS
A man jogs past a house covered with anit-coup banners near Suva, 07 December 2006, as Fiji's military leader Voreqe Bainimarama sacks senior police officers and civil servants a day after warning he would not tolerate criticism of the bloodless coup he led this week. Newly-appointed premier admitted 07 December the military had illegally ousted the elected government but said the nation did not need Western-style democracy. In his first public comments a day after being sworn in, caretaker prime minister Jona Senilagakali defended the overthrow of what he termed a corrupt government and warned Australia and New Zealand not to interfere.
