GERMANY-NETHERLANDS-BELGIUM-SINTERKLAAS
Sinterklaas (C) and his Zwarte Pieten (R) walk through the Dutch Quarter of Potsdam, eastern Germany, 09 December 2006. According to the Dutch holiday tradition, Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) riding on his white horse is always accompanied by his helper, the Black Peter, to bring gifts to children on Saint Nicholas' eve. Potsdam's Dutch Quarter was built in the period from 1734 to 1742 for Dutch craftsmen, who had been invited to come to Potsdam by King Frederick Wilhelm I, the Soldier King. Johann Boumann was the head of construction for this quarter covering an area of four city blocks with about 150 houses built of red bricks in the Dutch style. AFP PHOTO DDP/MICHAEL URBAN GERMANY OUT
