SPACE-SUN-FLARE
This 13 December, 2006 Solar and Heliospheric Observatory(SOHO) Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope(EIT) image shows a flare up from sunspot 930 on the Sun. Sunspot 930 unleashed an X3 (major events that can trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms) solar flare 13 December, sending a radiation storm towards the Earth. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) ranks the storm, expected to reach Earth 14 December, as a category S2(moderate): satellites may experience some glitches and reboots but the astronauts in the ISS and Discovery shuttle are in no danger.
