IRELAND-NIRELAND-BRITAIN-POLITICS-POLICE

Sinn Fein deputy leader Martin McGuinness (R) arrives at the Great Southern Hotel near Dublin, in Ireland, 29 December 2006, as he attends a Sinn Fein special conference on policing. The British and Irish governments have set a March 26 deadline for Northern Ireland's parties to have restored power-sharing between majority Protestants, who mostly favour retaining links with Britain, and Catholics, who largely favour union with the Republic of Ireland. Sinn Fein has historically opposed recognising the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and its predecessor the Royal Ulster Constabulary, because of what it sees as a Protestant bias within the service.
