ALGERIA-BANKING-TRIAL

Algerian women are seen waiting out of the court hall during the trial of the Algeria's biggest financial scandal since independence, that opened in Blida City 50 km west of Algiers capital, 08 January 2007. This part of the trial follows the loss of more than 3.2 billion dinars (3.4 million euros / 4.5 million dollars) from the accounts of the Khalifa Bank. Rafik Khalifa, owner of the Khalifa group and once a golden boy of Algeria's business world, is the key defendant, but he has been in London since 2003 and will be tried in absentia.
The bank's parent group went bankrupt in 2003 as result of the scandal. AFP PHOTO / FAYEZ NURELDINE
