IRAQ-MINORITY-SHABAK
Iraqi Shiite Shabak minority members from the northwestern Iraqi provience of Ninawa, protest in front of Kurdistan National Assembly in Arbil, north of Iraq, 16 January 2007. The protestors demanded the annexation of their regions to the autonomous Kurdistani region. The Shabak are distinct from other Kurds in both their language and their religion. They speak the Dimila dialect of Kurdish and follow the Shiite branch of Islam and have been enumerated separately in population censuses since the days of the British mandate after World War I.
