CUBA-CASTRO-FILES
TO GO WITH AFP STORY - (FILES) Portrait of Fidel Castro Ruz, Prime Secretary of the Cuban Communist party and President of the State Council during a press conference in 1976. Castro, who has said he would never retire from politics, was forced into seclusion when he underwent intestinal surgery on July 27, and until 23 January, 2007 has not been seen in public since, other than on brief televised footage. The 80-year-old leader, who has led Cuba with a firm grip for almost five decades, is a holdout against history who turned the tiny nation into a thorn in the paw of the mighty United States.
