NETHERLANDS-CULTURE-HERITAGE-WINDMILLS
(FILES) -- A file photo taken 08 October 2002 shows the sails of Dutch windmills set in the mourning position (top sail at 5 to twelve), in Kinderdiujk, to commemorate Prince Claus, who died at the age of 76. In the beginning there was water. Then the Dutch came and made their land: a centuries-long task of drying out lakes, marsh land and even parts of the sea all thanks to windmills. In the Netherlands 2007 is the "Year of the Windmill" to celebrate the national symbol that has brought the country riches and even shaped the social fabric but is now threatend by time, urban expansion and simply lack of interest. Historical documents trace the first Dutch windmill back to 1407. The mill mentioned in the papers no longer exists. AFP PHOTO / JASPER JUINEN
