PHILIPPINES-ENVIRONMENT-MARINE CONSERVATION-GIANT CLAM
A diver releases a young giant clam for propagation at the protected coastal area in Puerto Princesa city 14 February 2007 on this capital of western Philippine island of Palawan. The mollusc with scientific name Tridacna gigas is an endangered species due to overexploitation from collectors who harvest the clams for their meat and to supply the aquarium trade. The city agriculture office released 16 young giant clams in their restocking farms located in protected areas as part of the goverment campaign to save the threatened species. The mollusc shell can reach the size of 1.37 meters long and weigh as much as 300 kilogram when fully grown. Puerto Princesa city has maintained an aggressive environmental campaign to attract tourists and maintain ecological balance. AFP PHOTO/ROMEO GACAD
